Musculoskeletal disorders affect 5-7% of the\u00a0 population in Canada. Neck pain is one of the more common\u00a0 musculoskeletal complaints. Spinal manipulative therapy attempts to\u00a0 reduce pain and increase range of motion. Treatments from any profession\u00a0 require valid evidence of efficacy. This study examines two popular\u00a0 treatments used by Canadian chiropractors, a mechanically assisted\u00a0 device commonly known as the Activator Adjusting Instrument \u2122, and\u00a0 spinal manipulative therapy. Fourteen subjects were randomly into two\u00a0 groups. Each subject was assigned by a blind examiner and then given one\u00a0 of the two treatment interventions provided by an experienced\u00a0 chiropractor. The outcome measures used were lateral flexion and a\u00a0 subjective pain rating scale. The results revealed that there were no\u00a0 statistically significant differences before and after the\u00a0 interventions. Further study is required using larger sample sizes\u00a0 before conclusions can be made regarding the efficacy of the selected\u00a0 interventions. However, the importance of the need for future\u00a0 comparative studies is discussed.<\/p>\n
